Estimated Lesson Time: 2 Days

Instructional Plan Outline:

Preparation
1. Create Teachers’ Colleges spreadsheet ahead of time and have it ready to distribute to students.
2. Make sure each student has Internet access for doing online research on the teacher’s college/university to find the school’s colors and at least one image (school logo, emblem or mascot) representative of school.

Motivation
1. Watch a Goal Motivator video - http://alturl.com/q7hzr
2. Teacher and librarian discuss goals with students – future goals, what they want to be, how they are going to make that happen, and end the discussion with college as the answer.
3. Talk about people they may know who have gone to college or are in college.
4. Narrow discussion to people on campus they know, teachers and administrators, and the colleges/universities that they attended.

Presentation
5. Show students examples of some signs. See Teacher College samples.
6. Find your assigned teacher information on the Teachers’ Colleges spreadsheet created by the teacher-librarian ahead of time and distributed to students upon beginning the lesson.
7. You will only make one sign for your assigned teacher and degree. For example, if you’re assigned a teacher that has multiple degrees, you will only be assigned one of his/her degrees. (Each student will only make one sign.)
8. Students will view an online MS Publisher tutorial - http://tinyurl.com/qgx3o7w
9. Educators pause throughout the video to highlight certain functions the students will be using in making their sign.
10. Educators discuss the next steps to take in creating signs. (Students use the Publisher Checklist for numbers 13-19.)
11. Go online and find your assigned teacher’s college or university’s web site to do a little research. Find:

a. The school’s colors (e.g. Texas A&M University colors are maroon and white.)
b. Academic programs such as business, education or engineering.
c. Image representing school/university such as the school logo, emblem or mascot. Once you find the image(s) you’ll use on your sign, download the image(s) to your computer.

12. Open a new Publisher document and select a template from the “Awards Certificates” or “Signs” categories.
13. Change colors on the template to the appropriate school colors.
14. Include the name of the school, level of degree with the major, and the teacher’s name as specified and spelled on the spreadsheet.
15. Insert the image representing the school such as the school logo, mascot or emblem.
16. Change the font size, color, style until you are satisfied with the design.
17. Use correct spelling! Make sure all college, degrees and majors, and names, are spelled and capitalized correctly!

Guided Practice
18. Teacher and librarian will monitor students’ sign/poster making. They will conference with the students on whether or not they are complying with the standards set on the rubric.
19. Students will be guided to the rubric so that they may refer to it and go through each point to make sure that they have included every requirement in their sign.

Closure
20. Students will present their posters to their classmates.
21. Post signs in the teachers’ classrooms or on their doors.

Assessment
22. The teacher and librarian assess the 8.5x11 teacher college sign created by the student using the rubric provided. Could the librarian participate in the assessment as well?

Extension
23. Students can proceed to create a sign for a university/college that they may be interested in learning more
