Lesson Title:  Multimedia Book Report

Lesson Plan Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 

1.  Identify the title, author, the setting, and the main characters of their book.

2.  Summarize text in own words including the beginning, middle, and a teaser for the ending. 

3.  Plan, develop, produce, and present a visual presentation.  

 

ELA-R TEKS:

 §110.19.b (17) Writing/Expository and Procedural Texts

Students write expository and procedural or work-related texts to communicate ideas and information to specific audiences for specific purposes. Students are expected to:

 (D)  produce a multimedia presentation involving text and graphics using available technology

Classroom Teacher – School Librarian(s) Collaboration

  • Classroom teacher and school librarian design a sample project and a graphic organizer/assessment tool together.
  • Teacher and librarian model making notes on the graphic organizer while reading. Both educators monitor students’ guided practice.
  • Both educators assess student learning outcomes.

   

Measurable Outcome or Final Product:  After developing a storyboard with a Web 2.0 tool, students create a multimedia book report.

Preparation:

  1. Educators distribute graphic organizer and the assessment tool outlining the requirements for the Multimedia Book Report in advance so as students read their novel they can plan their presentation. Students can also use Cornell Notes to record information about their book as they read.
  2. Educators post the learning objectives.
  3. Students must pick a book for project. Students can work on their own or work in groups of two or three. Each student would be required to turn in their own rubric.
  4. Students have two weeks to read book and complete graphic organizer.
  5. Students will be given time at the beginning of each class to read silently and write in their journals the information they will need for their presentation.
  6. Students need to plan out their presentation before going to the library/computer lab to create the presentation. This can be done on their graphic organizer on Popplet or on a storyboarding tool like Cacoo.

   

Presentation:
7. Educators will demonstrate how to use Popplet, VoiceThread, or Glogster. Teachers may begin with one for the first report and users other for future book reports. Educators will also demonstrate how to insert graphics from the Internet.
8. Educators show examples of a Multimedia Book Report to get students excited about the book report project. Examples:

9. Educators review the lesson objectives.


Guided Practice:

10.  On lab day, students will be at their own computer with their prepared graphic organizer.

11.  Educators will monitor the students as they create their presentation, offering help as needed.

 

Closure:

12.   Students will present their Multimedia Book Report to the class. Students may be divided in half with each educator facilitating half of the presentations so that students are only presenting to half the class. Students may present to entire class if there isn’t enough space available. Book reports will be posted to the Web or linked to the catalogue and students can view or review all of the reports at their leisure.

 

Assessment:

13.  Educators review and assess the students’ presentations using the Multimedia Evaluation Rubric.

 

Extensions:

14.  Publish links to a blog, wiki, or Web site.
